About the Business
Basingstoke Traditional Aikido Club was founded in Basingstoke 1968. Although the Dojo has moved to different locations within the town, it is now at Oakridge West Community Centre, Upton Crescent, Oakridge, Basingstoke. The present practise times are Mondays & Wednesdays 8-9.30pm.
Traditional Aikido is instructed within the club as a Japanese Martial Art in the way it was first introduced into the UK By Sensei Kenshiro Abbe. The strong application of techniques taught at the 'Hut' at this time are still easily recognised as is the closing down of the opponent's attack with the spiraling movement associated with Aikido.
The instructors at Basingstoke use the form system of teaching as introduced into Europe by Sensei Masamichi Norro and taken up by Sensei Ken Williams the National Coach in the UK for Aikido in the early 1960s.
